AUTOMATING A MANUAL PRODUCTION PROCESS FOR AN AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCT
PRODUCT: Clip nut & cover latch
Automotive industry supplier Donaldson found ESPS through a referral. When Donaldson approached their robot specialist DENSO for partial automation of their production line, Donaldson was recommended to hire ESPS as their robotic integration partner.
Donaldson was looking for a long-term automation partner. The aim of Donaldson was a phased automation of a fully manual production process. The first challenge was automating the mounting of multiple clip nuts to one of their products. The automation should lead to quality improvements and costs savings.
HOW WE SOLVED IT
ESPS made a test tool to show how the robotic systems might be used for mounting clip nuts. The proposal was enthusiastically received, which led to a second assignment: the automated fixing of cover latches to the product of Donaldson.
For both assignments, ESPS built a manufacturing system consisting of a six-axis DENSO robot and a servo controlled turntable.
The creative solution that the engineers of ESPS have provided exceeded Donaldson’s expectations, resulting in the benefits listed below.
- Fewer operators needed in the production process
- Saves floor space
- Increased production quality
- Cost savings
